5 steps to your application

Here we show you how to apply in five simple steps. We recommend that you start your application early so that you have enough time to submit it in full and on time.

Test Bewerbung 1

1. Registration on hochschulstart.de

When applying for the first semester of the admission-restricted Bachelor's degree programs, the first step is to register at Hochschulstart as these study places are allocated via the dialog-oriented service procedure (DoSV) on Hochschulstart.de.

A BID and BAN number is assigned during registration. As these numbers will be required at a later date and possibly also for applications to other universities, it is important to make a note of them.

For applications to higher semesters or for applications for our Master's degree programs or Bachelor's degree programs without admission, no registration at Hochschulstart is required.

Test Bewerbung 2

2. Registration in the RWU application portal

The next step is to register in the RWU application portal is required. When applying for a degree program that participates in the dialog-oriented service procedure (DoSV), you will be asked for your BID and BAN in the RWU application portal. However, this information can also be entered at a later date. Further instructions on registration can be found in the portal.

After registration, the user ID will be sent by e-mail. Applicants can use this to log in to the RWU application portal and process their application.

Test Bewerbung 3

3. Complete and submit the application form

After successfully logging in to the RWU application portal the application can be started. Documents such as the university entrance qualification (HZB) are required for the application and should be kept ready for upload.

Once the online application has been successfully completed, the final step is"Submit application" to submit the application electronically.

Test Bewerbung 4

4. Prioritization of applications via Hochschulstart

This step is only necessary when applying for several degree programs that are awarded via the Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV). In this case, after applying in the RWU Portal, the applications must be prioritized on Hochschulstart must be prioritized.

If several admission offers are received, the applications with admission offers that were prioritized low are automatically eliminated.

Steps for prioritization:

  1. Registration on www.hochschulstart.de
  2. Menu item "My applications"
  3. Execute the "Prioritize applications" function (below the table)
  4. Save

The prioritization is only visible on Hochschulstart and not in the RWU application portal.

Test Bewerbung 5

5. Check application status

The current application status can be checked at any time in the RWU application portal at any time. Our Admissions Office will process incoming applications as quickly as possible. With a valid application, applicants automatically take part in the selection procedure which starts after the application deadline. In the case of admission-free degree programs, admission offers are allocated on an ongoing basis and before the application deadline.

Those who are admitted receive an offer of admission. If the applicant wishes to accept the place, the next step is to enrollment at RWU.

If admission cannot be granted by the end of the admission procedure, applicants will receive a letter of rejection. A letter of exclusion is issued if the application documents have not been received in full or are invalid for the selection procedure.

FAQ General questions about the application

The regular application deadline for the winter semester is July 15th and for the summer semester January 15th. The digital application must be received by the University by the deadline. There are different, earlier application deadlines for our English-taught degree programs.

These deadlines are cut-off deadlines. Unfortunately, applications received after this deadline can no longer be considered.

No, some of the degree courses are only offered in the winter or summer semester. You can find out which degree programs are offered when in the course overview.

For admission to a degree course, you first need a higher education entrance qualification (HZB), for example the Abitur, the Fachhochschulreife or the Fachgebundene Hochschulreife. There are also various documents that must be submitted with your application. A corresponding list will be displayed as part of your online application.

The study application can be interrupted at any time and resumed later, e.g. if further information needs to be researched. Previous information will be saved and retained.

You can only edit the application and the associated information until you have finally submitted it by clicking on "Submit application". If you want to change the application after this, you must first withdraw it and then submit it again. The "old" application will then no longer be processed by the university.

All documents required for the application for a study place are listed in your online application. As a rule, these include

  • the degree certificate,
  • a study orientation test for applications for Bachelor's degree programs, for example https://www.was-studiere-ich.de
  • If applicable, documents relating to vocational training or professional activity
  • if applicable, certificates of voluntary service such as an FSJ.

You can find more detailed information on the information page of your preferred degree program.

If you do not have all the necessary documents before the application deadline, e.g. a vocational training certificate, you can submit this later. Please send us preliminary proof of this before the application deadline. However, the university entrance qualification must be submitted by the deadline in any case.

If you have any questions about your university entrance qualification, you can contact our Admissions Office contact.

Your online application and, in the case of admission, your application for enrollment in written form must be submitted within the given deadlines.

Please register for this in the RWU application portal to apply.

"In preparation": You have not sent your online application.

"Received": You have submitted the application online.

FAQ Special questions about the application

Please ask at the Studienkolleg Konstanz whether your higher education entrance qualification (HZB) obtained abroad entitles you to study in the same way as a German HZB.

You should also apply for official recognition there before you apply to RWU. Please submit this confirmation together with your application for admission.

Yes, as a master craftsperson, technician, business administrator or professionally qualified person, you are qualified to apply for a Bachelor's degree course of your choice under certain conditions.

General university entrance qualification via advanced training

Master craftsmen, technicians, business administrators, business economists or other recognized advanced training (see § 58 para. 2 no. 5 LHG).

The following requirements apply in order to participate in the admission procedure:

  1. Written proof of a counseling interview held at a university must be provided. Please arrange a consultation appointment with the dean of studies of the degree program for which you would like to apply for admission in good time.
  2. The equivalence of the advanced training will be checked and determined by the university.

Subject-specific university entrance qualification via an aptitude test

Professionally qualified persons with at least 2 years of recognized vocational training + at least 3 years of professional experience in the subject area of the desired course of study (see § 58 para. 2 no. 6 LHG).

The following requirements apply in order to participate in the admission procedure:

  1. Written proof of a counseling interview held at a university must be provided. Please arrange a consultation appointment with the dean of studies of the degree program for which you would like to apply for admission in good time.
  2. The university will check and determine whether the subject is suitable.
  3. Proof that you have passed the aptitude test. You can find further information on the HTWG Konstanz website. The examination takes place once a year in April/May.

Applicants who have already completed a degree at a German university can be admitted as part of a special quota. The selection is made on the basis of a determined number.

If you are interested in a second degree program with us at RWU, you must apply as normal during the regular application periods via our RWU online application portal.

Additional documents:

  • Informal justification of the second degree program
  • Copy of Bachelor's/Master's certificate, incl. transcript of grades

Note: Please note the applicable fees for a second degree program.

If you are interested in entering a higher semester at RWU, you must apply as normal during the regular application periods via our RWU online application portal. Please note that not all semesters (FS) are offered in the winter and summer semesters. You should be able to provide proof of approximately 30 credits per completed semester.

Important: Applications for a higher FS can only be considered if the degree program has free capacities in the respective FS. Therefore, official feedback on the application can only be given after the regular application phase or after the re-registration period at RWU.

Additional documents:

To transfer to RWU, you must apply by the deadline in the RWU application portal for the degree program of your choice. For your enrollment, the grades you have already achieved in this subject will be taken into account, which you should enclose in the form of a transcript of records. A certificate of enrollment from your current university is also required.

If you would like to continue studying the same subject as at your previous university, please apply for the following semester at our university. For example, if you have already studied two semesters at another university, you will now apply for the third semester at RWU.

If you would like to switch to another degree program, you apply as normal for the first semester of the new degree program. As soon as you are enrolled, you can have your credits from your previous degree program recognized. You can find the relevant form in the download area under Student Administration Office.

The application for an internal change of degree program is carried out online like a normal study place application. You can apply directly online with your student account via myCampus - the university portal of RWU university portal.

To do this, you submit your application to the Student Services Admissions Office before the start of lectures:

  • the application"Enrollment as a guest student" (to be found in the download area under Student Administration Office)
  • Confirmation from the lecturers that you are allowed to attend the respective courses (informal).

Guest auditor status is valid for one semester and can generally be applied for all courses. The amount of the guest student fee depends on the number of teaching units/semester hours per week* (SWS) you wish to attend.

Up to 4 SWS per week: EUR 60.00
From 5 to 8 SWS per week: EUR 120.00
From 9 SWS per week: EUR 150.00

* One teaching unit/SWS lasts 45 minutes.

The following guest student fees apply to language courses:

Up to 4 teaching units per week: EUR 180.00
From 5 to 8 teaching units per week: EUR 340.00

The study places allocated in the hardship quota are awarded to applicants for whom the rejection of the application for admission would constitute "exceptional hardship".

Definition of "exceptional hardship": If special social or family reasons relating to one's own person make it absolutely necessary to start studying immediately or to change study location immediately (or if further waiting is unreasonable).

Examples:

  • Illness with a tendency to worsen (must be personal)
  • Restrictions in the choice or practice of profession that only allow the choice of certain professional fields or require the abandonment of the previous studies or profession, whereby as a rule the desired course of study must allow for a successful professional integration and a reasonable bridging of the waiting period is unreasonably difficult or not possible

The application is made by means of an informal letter and the relevant supporting documents. It is important to note that proof of illness alone is not sufficient for the application to be recognized. Instead, you must also prove that this burdensome circumstance constitutes "exceptional hardship", e.g. by means of a specialist medical report.

Evidence:

  • Specialist medical report that adequately comments on the reasons listed (should contain statements that medical laypersons can understand about the origin, severity, progression, treatment options for the impairment and prognosis for further progression)
  • Any additional evidence (in particular, severe disability certificate, assessment notice from the pension office (proof of severe disability alone is not sufficient, but can supplement medical reports)

If you have "impairment-related circumstances for which you are not responsible and which have led to a delay in obtaining the HZB", you can submit an application to improve your waiting time in order to increase the number of waiting semesters in the waiting time quota.

Examples

  • Prolonged absence from school due to illness within the last three years before obtaining the HZB
  • GdB of 50 or higher (= severe disability)
  • Prolonged severe disability/illness, unless already covered by the two aforementioned reasons
  • or other comparable special health circumstances

The application is made in an informal letter, together with the relevant supporting documents. Important: Proof of illness alone is not sufficient for the application to be recognized. You must also prove that the acquisition of your HZB has been delayed by this incriminating circumstance, for example by means of a certificate from your school stating the reason for and duration of the delay.

Evidence:

  • Certificate from the school about the reasons for or duration of the delay in obtaining the HZB (e.g. repetition of a school year due to several months in hospital or high levels of absence due to illness)
  • Specialist medical certificate
  • Assessment notice from the pension office
  • or other supporting documents

If you have "impairment-related circumstances for which you are not responsible and which have prevented you from achieving a better HZB", you can submit an application to improve your average grade.

You must also prove that you have acquired a poorer HZB due to this incriminating circumstance, for example by means of an official school report.

Evidence:

  • School reports (not from individual teachers!) and copies of school reports that prove the connection between the impairment-related circumstances and the drop in academic performance (all documents on which the school report is based must be enclosed)
  • Specialist medical report
  • assessment notice from the pension office
  • or other supporting evidence

What can I get credit for?

In addition to academic achievements, extracurricular activities can lead to an improvement in the admission grade.

Recognized achievements can include

  • The degree program Media Design offers a voluntary homework to improve the admission grade by up to 1.5 grades
  • Participation in the trial study program Talentscanner at the RWU
  • Voluntary services (voluntary social year, federal voluntary service, voluntary military service)
  • International voluntary services (e.g. in development aid, stays abroad in the service of an NGO)

Which activities are recognized and how they are weighted varies depending on the degree program. A detailed list can be found in the admission regulations of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. The current version can be found on the website of the Admissions Office in the download area.

FAQ Recognition

Yes, you can have lectures from other degree programs and/or other universities credited. Please make an appointment with your respective dean of studies as early as possible. Please bring the following documents with you to this meeting

  1. An official transcript of records documenting your achievements elsewhere.
  2. Descriptions of the courses you would like to have credited (ideally from the module handbook of your previous degree program).
  3. The list of subjects that are to be recognized.
  4. The recognition form from the Student Administration Office (under Downloads - "Recognition/recognition of study and examination achievements").

Please note: In order for lectures to be recognized, they must correspond to the respective lectures in your new degree program in terms of scope (ECTS) and content.

You can also find general information on recognition and credit transfer on the homepage of the German Rectors' Conference website.

Selection and admission procedure

Admission requirements and selection procedure

What requirements must be met for my desired degree program? The decision as to whether applicants are admitted to a degree program depends on the so-called procedural grade. For most Bachelor's degree programs, this is made up of the grades of the university entrance qualification in German, mathematics and a secondary language as well as the average grade. There are further selection criteria for some degree courses. Additional qualifications and activities, such as voluntary services or internships, can improve the procedural grade.

At RWU, a selection procedure is carried out on the basis of the application documents. You can find the respective admission regulations on the website of the Student Administration Office / Admissions Office.

Warten Wartesemester Zeit Sanduhr

Waiting semester

Each semester that you were not enrolled at a German educational institution after obtaining your higher education entrance qualification counts as a waiting semester. A calendar year comprises two semesters: the summer semester and the winter semester. In addition to the Numerus Clausus and the final grade, the number of waiting semesters is another factor that plays a role in the allocation of study places. At German universities, there is always a separate contingent of free study places, which is allocated on the basis of the number of waiting semesters. In degree programs with restricted admission, around 20 percent of all places are allocated to applicants with a long waiting period. Waiting semesters are therefore particularly helpful for school leavers who do not have an Abitur.

Spitzensport und Studium

Study and competitive sport

As top athletes are often bound to a particular location, there is a special quota when applying for a restricted-admission degree program. In order to be eligible for this special regulation, applicants must prove that they:

  1. belong to an Olympic, perspective, supplementary or team sports squad or junior squad formed at federal level by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, or
  2. arean elected member of a local political body with a general political mandate (no interest groups or similar) and are therefore bound to the place of study.

Proof is provided in the form of a letter from the respective sports association/club and is enclosed with the application together with an informal letter. In addition, the option is selected in the RWU application portal under "Reasons for hardship application".

FAQ Selection and admission procedure

If you are interested in one of our degree programs for which places are allocated via the DoSV, your application begins with registration on the application portal of hochschulstart.de. To register, you enter your personal data. You will then receive an applicant ID (BID) and an applicant authentication number (BAN). You will need these to apply in the RWU application portal. After submitting your application, it is important to prioritize the applications on hochschulstart.de if you have applied for several degree programs that are coordinated via the Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV). If you receive several admission offers, the lower-priority applications with admission offers are automatically eliminated.

The dialog-oriented service procedure supports the universities in their admissions processes and helps to avoid vacant study places.
You can find information on the dialog-oriented service procedure at sv.hochschulstart.de. It provides a wealth of information on registration and application, FAQs and much more.

You can find out which admission requirements apply to which Bachelor's degree course in the admission regulations for the respective degree course.

In general, the following selection criteria apply when determining the admission grade for a Bachelor's degree course:

  1. Result of the higher education entrance qualification (average grade) and
  2. Individual grades of the university entrance qualification, which provide information about the subject-specific aptitude:
    1. Mathematics
    2. German
    3. a continued modern foreign language; in the case of several foreign languages, priority is given to the course taken in all four semesters of upper secondary school, then priority is given to the course completed with the best result.

In addition, the selection is made according to the following previous experience, which provides information about subject-specific aptitude:

  1. Completed vocational training in an apprenticeship that is assigned to a main occupational group in the list of recognized training occupations in accordance with Section 90 (3) (3) of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) in the current valid version, and professional experience of at least 12 months duration in an apprenticeship in the same main occupational group, insofar as this has not already been taken into account as part of the completed vocational training and
  2. special previous training, practical activities or extracurricular achievements and qualifications that provide information about the subject-specific performance; per applicant.

The procedural grade for the Bachelor's degree programs is determined by the weighted overall grade and possible improvements.

Calculation formula for the overall grade:
[(average grade of the HZB) + (grades German + mathematics *2 + continued modern foreign language)/4] / 2

Calculation formula for the Social Work degree program:
In the Social Work degree program, the math grade is not weighted twice:
[(average grade of the HZB) + (grades German, mathematics and continued modern foreign language)/3] /2

Improving the overall grade:
Many degree programs offer to improve the overall grade through previous experience and extracurricular qualifications. Further information on this can be found under the tab "Recognition of prior achievements".

The following selection criteria are used to determine the procedural grade for the Master's degree programs:

  1. The admission requirement is a subject-relevant university degree or an equivalent degree with a total of 210 ECTS credits:
    • The required subject area and the minimum required final grade of the university degree and any other necessary admission requirements can be found in the table in Appendix 1 for the individual Master's degree programs.
    • Applicants whose Bachelor's degree program comprises 180 ECTS must complete the missing ECTS by the time they register for the Master's thesis at the latest.
    • The missing 30 ECTS can be achieved through the recognition of competences acquired outside of school or through the acquisition of competences by taking modules from relevant Bachelor's programs. Students will be advised on this by the Dean of Studies.
    • The modules to be taken must be approved by the examination board of the degree program, in the Computer Science degree program by the selection committee.
  2. The study places to be awarded after deduction of the preliminary quotas (hardship quota and local commitment) are allocated after a ranking list has been drawn up based on the result of the university degree, which is a prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree program, and any other selection criteria. Any further selection criteria for the individual degree programs can be found in the table in Appendix 1.
  3. In the Master's degree course in Technology Management & Optimization, 2 places are allocated in advance for the summer semester and 3 places for the winter semester for applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Engineering:
    • The ranking list is drawn up on the basis of the determined procedural grade, starting with the best grade.
    • In the event of a tie, the order will be decided by lot.
    • Applicants who do not receive an offer of admission in advance will take part in the further selection procedure.

The admission or rejection notices will be sent to you in the RWU application portal for you to download. They will not be sent by post.

Please note that you will only be informed about changes to the status of your application (e.g. admitted) if you have activated e-mail notifications.

Save your notification promptly for your records, as you will no longer be able to access it after the application process.

Yes, if not all admitted applicants have enrolled by the enrolment deadline, you will be moved up. If you are admitted in the succession procedure, you will receive a letter of admission in the RWU application portal.
