Artificial intelligence ring seminar: AI and democracy

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Thiel
Prof. Dr. Thorsten Thiel von der Uni Erfurt spricht im Ringseminar am 11. Juni über das Zusammenspiel von Künstlicher Intelligenz und Demokratie.

Weingarten - The ring seminar on Thursday, June 11, will focus on the development of the interplay between artificial intelligence and democracy.

Digitalization has profoundly changed Western democracies. While the internet and social media were initially seen as a beacon of hope for a more open and interactive society, skepticism about their effects on democratic processes has since grown considerably. The broad social adaptation of AI applications may herald a new phase in this development.

In his lecture, political scientist Professor Dr. Thorsten Thiel sheds light on three central areas of this change: the transformation of the democratic public sphere, the increasing mechanization of state decision-making processes and the changes in mechanisms of participation and representation. He discusses what adjustments democratic systems need under the conditions of AI and what their effective regulation could look like.

Thorsten Thiel is Professor of Democracy Promotion and Digital Policy at the University of Erfurt. In his research, he focuses in particular on the transformation of the democratic public sphere and the possibilities of intervening in political systems in a regulatory and formative way.
