The EU funding program “Erasmus+” has reached a significant milestone: Since its launch in 1987, one million students from Germany have completed a study or internship abroad with the program’s support. During the same period, nearly as many international students came to Germany through the program. If we also include the university staff who received funding, a total of around 1.1 million people from Germany have benefited from Erasmus. RWU Ravensburg-Weingarten University has been accredited as an Erasmus university since the 1990s.

As part of the “#OneInOneMillion” campaign, RWU has named student Daniil Sergeev as “one in a million,” representing those who completed an Erasmus semester this year at Kadir Has University in Turkey. Together with a fellow student, he was the first RWU outgoing student to attend this still very new partner university.

Elective courses from other disciplines

Daniil Sergeev is studying mechanical engineering and is currently nearing completion of his bachelor’s degree. He deliberately chose economics and social science courses for his semester abroad to broaden his skills. “In addition to the academic gains from the lectures, exploring the city of Istanbul and Turkish culture in general was, of course, a very special experience for me,” he explains. “The bureaucracy and communication with the authorities in Turkey were a bit challenging at times, but the International Office at RWU provided excellent support and was always available to us.”

The student received a certificate as well as an Erasmus bag containing various small items that students are sure to find useful. “We are delighted to have enabled exchange opportunities for students at our university as part of Erasmus and to have contributed to this remarkable number,” says Katrin Ronneburger, Director of the International Office at RWU.

Popular Destination Countries

In the 2025/26 academic year, 30 students received funding through the Erasmus program to spend a semester abroad at a partner university. In previous academic years as well, just under 30 students were able to study abroad through Erasmus. Particularly popular host countries for RWU students are Spain, Finland, and Turkey. In recent years, however, there has also been increased interest in Hungary and the Baltic countries. The most frequently chosen host university for RWU outbound students is the Universidad de Málaga in Spain. The Faculty of Technology and Management accounts for the largest share of outbound students within RWU. With this Germany-wide success, Erasmus remains a key program for an open, connected, and sustainable Europe.
