What is health economics

The bachelor's degree program in health economics trains business and economics graduates for the healthcare sector who work at the interface between economics and patient care.
As a health economist, you will help shape the growing healthcare sector. Topics such as human resources management, marketing or corporate management are also highly relevant in healthcare facilities (healthcare management). In addition, political, social and legal aspects also play a role. You will support the various players in this growth industry to position themselves better economically and thus improve care.

Practical relevance

Already during your studies, you will gain valuable experience and apply your theoretical knowledge through study-related internships in companies and institutions. Here you will learn what practical problems there are in healthcare management. In the course of your practical semester, you will work in a company of our numerous cooperation partners. Often, these practical assignments result in direct offers to start a career or opportunities to write your thesis with practical relevance in the company.

Benefit from our experts and make valuable professional contacts.

Who receives a study place?

The applicants with the best overall grades are admitted. In the last admission procedures, all applicants received a study place.

Selection procedure - how is the overall grade calculated?

At RWU, the admission procedure for this degree program is governed by the Admission and Selection Statutes for Bachelor's degree programs and is carried out on the basis of the application documents. The preparation of a proposal list or ranking list is explained below: from the application documents, the applicant's position on a ranking list is determined according to the following procedure: Calculation of a weighted overall grade according to the formula
[(average grade of university entrance qualification)+(grades German, mathematics * 2 and continued modern foreign language)/4] / 2

If there are more applicants than places, 90% of the places are awarded by the selection procedure (best overall grade) and 10% of the places are awarded by waiting period.

Improvements of the overall grade

This overall grade may be improved if one or more of the following qualifications are demonstrated:

  • A completed vocational training in the commercial or medical field and from the recognized occupational groups according to the admission and selection statutes. Admission and selection statutes: 0,3
  • Work experience in the training occupation of at least 1 year: 0.1. This bonus is limited to 0.2.

Extracurricular achievements, pract. Extracurricular achievements, practicalactivities and recognized previous experience: 0.2 per qualification, max. 2 qualifications can be credited:

  • Voluntary social year (min. 11 months)
  • Federal voluntary service or work in development aid or comparable activities (each at least 11 months)

Move-up procedure

Prospective students often apply to several universities and study programs. As a result, study places regularly become vacant again because an applicant decides to take up another study place. These vacant places are then awarded to those who did not make it in the first place. Places are again awarded according to the ranking list, i.e. first to those with the best overall grade.

Further information about the application and the allocation of study places can be found in the Admissions Office.

Semester fee

Every semester , a semester fee is due for all students upon enrollment or re-registration. This fee is charged at a similar rate by all universities in Germany.

Composition and amount of the fee

Fees for international students and for second degree studies

In Baden-Württemberg, there has been a tuition fee for international students (non-EU citizens) and a second-study fee since the winter semester 2017/2018. Thus, in some cases, a tuition fee must be paid in addition to the semester fee.

Prior to enrollment, applicants from non-EU countries or applicants for a second degree will receive a form to assess whether a tuition fee obligation actually exists.

The amounts and detailed information can be found under Finances.

Human resources manager in a hospital

"I can only recommend studying health economics, the healthcare market is THE growth industry in Germany and also offers secure jobs in addition to a wide range of career prospects."

Claudia J. - Marketing and Fundraising

Claudia J.

Marketing/Fundraising Department at Diakonie Pfingstweid e.V.

"My studies in health economics led me to Tettnang to Diakonie Pfingstweid e.V.. The social enterprise with 306 employees is one of the most important providers of integration assistance in the Lake Constance region. My versatile field of activity covers the areas of marketing and fundraising. The co-design of the new homepage as well as the annual planning and implementation of the trade fair stand at the world's largest toy fair are part of my portfolio of tasks. As a trained fundraiser, I am committed to projects for which no funds are available and am always on the lookout for funding opportunities and supporters. Studying health economics has enabled me to enter a varied and interesting working life - recommendation: 100% !"

Tobias B.

BWKG - Baden-Württembergische Krankenhausgesellschaft e.V. in the rehabilitation and organization division.

"The study of health economics at the Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences was exactly the right thing for me because

  • a good overview of the health care system is provided and service providers, politics, associations, etc. are considered
  • lesser-known (but enormously important) players in the health care system are also highlighted
  • there is a network of interesting companies, e.g. for the practical semester
  • the professors are available as contact persons and are committed to the students.
  • Excursions to the Capital Congress and Medica are real highlights from which you benefit enormously."

Nina A. - Junior Manager Research & Development

Nina A.

Junior Manager Research & Development at OptiMedis AG

With my Master's degree in Health Economics and Health Care Management at the University of Hamburg, I was able to optimally build on my Bachelor's degree in Health Economics and further deepen the lecture content. Now I am employed at OptiMedis AG as Junior Manager Research & Development. Here I am primarily responsible for the project coordination of the EU project COMPAR-EU (Comparing the (cost-)effectiveness of self-management interventions in four high priority chronic diseases in Europe) as well as for the development of business cases.
The exciting thing for me about health economics is to get to know the diversity of the health care system and to look at important health policy issues in a multi-layered way.

Stephanie S. - Research Assistant

Stephanie S.

Research assistant at the IGES Institute in the area of Value & Access Strategy.

"Studying health economics offers a wide range of opportunities and career prospects. In addition to the content, I was particularly impressed by the practical relevance of my studies in Weingarten, including the practical semester and the excursions, as well as the direct contact with the professors. After completing my bachelor's degree, I went on to study for a master's degree in health economics and health care management at the University of Hamburg. In the meantime, I work as a research assistant at the IGES Institute in Berlin in the area of Value & Access Strategy. I supervise interdisciplinary projects at the interface of empirical research and strategic consulting on topics including market access of innovative medicines and regulatory instruments and their impact in the pharmaceutical market."
