Creating knowledge for better health ... For research and practice

The health sciences are facing a challenging departure due to the Corona pandemic, worldwide as well as in Germany. As we know today, it is important to ensure modern and high-quality health protection against dangers such as COVID-19 without neglecting the many other determinants of health, for example in the psychosocial area.

As an application-oriented study programme, we closely follow the ten "Essential Public Health Operations" (EPHOs) of the WHO, which also serve as the basis for the current future strategy for public health in Germany.

THE PRACTICE ON THE MOVE

As a Master's programme, we focus on EPHO 1 "Surveillance" and EPHO 4 "Health Promotion". However, we also offer our graduates the necessary knowledge to enable the necessary cooperation and integration in the practical field at the interfaces, e.g. to health protection (EPHO 3) or care planning (EPHO 5). Special emphasis is placed on the implementation of the ten EPHOs in the largest field of public health in Germany. This is the municipality, i.e. the level of independent cities and districts, with its almost 400 public health units throughout Germany.

The pandemic has revealed long-standing weaknesses in public health practice, especially in the public health service (ÖGD). These have now also been addressed by politicians. Of particular importance in this context is the Pact for the Public Health Service as a resolution of the Conference of Health Ministers in 2020, through which 5000 new positions are to be created in the public health service in the coming years, not only but also for health scientists (see also the report of the Advisory Council in October 2021).).

OUR OFFER TO YOU

What is needed are graduates with a solid background in public health and scientific methodology, but coupled with in-depth practical knowledge of, among other things, the tasks and structures in the public health service. This is precisely the focus of the Master of Applied Health Sciences at RWU. We offer you a broad and application-oriented qualification for various health science fields of work as well as specific competences for the main tasks of the ÖGD in prevention, health promotion, health reporting and coordination, including in-depth practical knowledge.

As an application-oriented health science degree programme, we also see it as our duty to make an active contribution to EPHO 10 "Public Health Research for Policy and Practice". Our focus is on health services research, epidemiology and health reporting, often in active cooperation with other institutions. On this basis, a number of our graduates have already been able to enter into further doctoral procedures, i.e. we are also happy to support you on this further path if necessary.

As a consecutive Master's programme, the programme builds directly on the competences acquired in the Bachelor's programme and deepens them. The competences required in the practical field can hardly be acquired from books alone, which is why practical relevance plays a central role in the Master's programme in Applied Health Science. The two-semester practical project serves this purpose, and contact with practitioners is also ensured to enable final theses to be written in cooperation with practitioners.

In the first semester, the technical and methodological foundations are laid. In the second half of the semester, the practical project is chosen, which is planned in the further course of the semester under aspects of project management, among others. The second semester is strongly oriented towards practice and also serves as preparation for the Master's thesis. It includes intensive work on the practice project, visits to practice sites, an in-depth elective and concrete data analyses on routine data and large secondary data sets. The third and final semester is reserved for writing the Master's thesis.

Admission

Application deadline for the summer semester 2023

15 January 2023

The admission requirement is a successfully completed degree in health sciences, nursing science(s), social sciences, sports sciences, therapy sciences or in another relevant field of social and health care with a final grade of at least 2.5.

In addition to the admission requirements, other criteria may have a favourable effect on selection:

  • Professional experience related to applied health sciences, at least 1 year.
  • Previous scientific experience or research
  • Service and voluntary work at institutions that take on social tasks (with a duration of at least 11 months).

Within the scope of the Master's programme, you will acquire 90 ECTS. Students whose Bachelor's programme comprises 180 ECTS can make up the missing 30 ECTS up to the registration of the Master's thesis in various ways. Our students are free to acquire missing credit points by attending relevant additional courses or within the framework of a practical phase.

If the Bachelor's degree certificate is not yet available at the time of the application deadline for the Master's degree programme, a certificate can be submitted as a substitute confirming the course achievements to date at the end of the penultimate semester (at least 80% of the total required achievements) and the grade point average achieved to date.

Further information on admission requirements can be found in the current admission regulations of the Master's programme in Applied Health Sciences.

Semester fee

Every semester , a semester fee is due for all students upon enrolment or re-registration. This fee is charged at a similar rate by all universities in Germany.

Composition and amount of the fee

Fees for international students and for second degree programmes

In Baden-Württemberg, there has been a tuition fee for international students (non-EU citizens) and a second-study fee since the winter semester 2017/2018. Thus, in some cases, a tuition fee must be paid in addition to the semester fee.

Before enrolment, applicants from non-EU countries or applicants for a second degree programme will receive a form to assess whether a tuition fee obligation actually exists.

The amounts and detailed information can be found under Finances.

Job profile & prospects

The professional profile of the Master's degree in Applied Health Science combines in-depth methodological and specialised knowledge with knowledge of fields of action and structures as well as the competence to initiate and shape planning processes in these fields.

Due to the focus on the Public Health Service, quite a few students also end up working in the field of public health services, be it at the municipal level, at the level of the Länder or in further education institutions. These positions are popular because they are classified in the higher service and offer prospects. The relevant knowledge and initial practical experience in public health service fields acquired in our Master's programme then often serve as a door opener in the application process.

Examples of fields of activity in health sciences can be found in applied epidemiology, e.g. health reporting, but also in the coordination and planning of health services, which often builds on this, such as in health conferences, workplace health promotion or in health and social services and facilities.

In addition, the Master's degree in Applied Health Science provides access to doctoral studies.

As a graduate of the Master's programme in Applied Health Science, you will qualify for fields of work in the following areas, among others:

  • Various science-related fields of work in social and health care (especially in the area of planning, coordination and reporting).
  • Management activities in services and institutions of the health and social care system
  • Educational institutions
  • Scientific institutions (e.g. within the framework of a scientific career such as a doctorate)
  • Public institutions responsible for prevention and health promotion (public health service, statutory health insurers, educational institutions, etc.)
  • Company health promotion
  • Social insurance institutions
  • Other institutions with a connection to health services research
  • and many more...
