Five steps to the application

You have made up your mind and want to apply for one or more degree programs at RWU. Here we show you how to apply in five easy steps. We recommend that you start your application early so that you have enough time to submit your application completely and on time.

Test Bewerbung 1

1. registration on hochschulstart.de

When applying for the first semester of the admission-restricted Bachelor's degree programs, the first thing to do is to register at Hochschulstart is required. These study places are allocated via the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) on Hochschulstart.de.

During registration, a BID and BAN number is assigned. Since these numbers will be needed at a later date and possibly also for applications to other universities, it is important to make a note of them.

For applications to higher semesters or for applications to our Master's programs or Bachelor's programs with open admission, registration at Hochschulstart is notrequired.

Test Bewerbung 2

2. registration in the RWU application portal

Next is the registration in the RWU application portal is required. When applying for a degree program that participates in the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure(DoSV), the BID and BAN are requested in the RWU application portal. However, this information can also be provided at a later date. Further instructions for registration can be found in the portal.

After registration, the user ID will be sent by e-mail. Applicants can use this to log in to the RWU application portal and process the application.

Test Bewerbung 3

3. fill out and submit application form

After successfully logging in to the RWU application portal the application can be started. Documents such as the university entrance qualification (HZB) are required for the application and should be kept ready for upload.

After the online application has been successfully completed, the final step is tosubmit the application electronically.

Test Bewerbung 4

This step is only required when applying for multiple degree programs that are awarded via the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV). In this case, after applying in the RWU Portal, the applications must be submitted on Hochschulstart be prioritized.

When receiving multiple admission offers, applications with admission offers that have been prioritized low are automatically eliminated.

Steps for prioritization:

  1. Log on to www.hochschulstart.de
  2. Menu item "My applications
  3. Execute function "Prioritize applications" (below the table)
  4. Save

The prioritization is only visible on Hochschulstart and not in the RWU application portal.

Test Bewerbung 5

5. check application status

The current application status can be viewed at any time in the RWU application portal at any time. Our Admissions Office will process incoming applications as quickly as possible. If the application is valid, applicants will automatically participate in the selection process which starts after the application deadline. In the case of open-admission programs, offers of admission are made on a continuous basis, even before the application deadline.

Those who are admitted receive an offer of admission. If the applicant wishes to accept the place, the next step is the Enrollment at RWU.

If no offer of admission can be made by the end of the admission process, applicants will receive a notice of rejection. A notice of exclusion is issued if the application documents have not been received in full or are not valid for the selection process.

FAQ General questions about the application

The regular application deadline for the winter semester is July 15 and for the summer semester January 15. The digital application must be received by the university by the deadline. There are different, earlier application deadlines for our English-language degree programs.

These deadlines are cut-off deadlines. All applications received after this deadline can unfortunately no longer be considered.

No, some of the degree programs are offered in the winter or summer semester. You can find out which degree programs are offered when in the Study program overview.

To be admitted to a course of study, you first need a university entrance qualification (HZB), i.e., for example, the Abitur or the Fachhochschulreife. In addition, there are various documents that must be submitted with the application. A corresponding list will be displayed as part of your online application.

The study application can be interrupted at any time and resumed later, e.g. if further details need to be researched. Previous information will be saved and retained.

You can only edit the application and the associated information until you have finally submitted it by clicking on "Submit application". If you want to change the application afterwards, you must first withdraw it and then submit it again. The "old" application will not be processed by the university until then.

All documents necessary for the study place application will be listed in your online application. As a rule, these include:

  • the degree certificate,
  • a study orientation test in the case of applications for bachelor's degree programs, for example https://www.was-studiere-ich.de
  • if applicable, documents relating to vocational training or professional activity
  • if applicable, certificates of voluntary service such as an FSJ.

For more detailed information, please visit the information page of your preferred study program.

If you do not have all the supporting documents in time before the application deadline, e.g. the certificate of completion of vocational training, you can submit this later. In this case, please send us a provisional certificate before the application deadline. However, the university entrance qualification must be submitted by the deadline in any case.

Please contact the Admissions Office if you have any questions regarding your university entrance qualification.

Your online application, and in case of admission, your enrollment application (in written form) must be received by the given deadlines.

FAQ Special questions about the application

Please ask at the Studienkolleg Konstanzwhether your university entrance qualification (HZB) obtained abroad entitles you to study in the same way as a German HZB.

There you can apply for official recognition before applying to RWU. Please then submit this confirmation together with your application for admission.

Yes, as a master craftsman, technician, specialist or vocationally qualified person, you have the qualification to apply for a bachelor's degree program of your choice under certain conditions.

General university entrance qualification via an advanced training program

Master craftsman, technician, specialist, business administrator or other recognized advanced training (see § 58 para. 2 no. 5 LHG).

The following requirements apply in order to participate in the admission procedure:

  1. Written proof of an advising interview held at a university must be provided (please arrange an advising appointment with the dean of studies of the program for which you are applying for admission in good time).
  2. The equivalence of the advanced training will be checked and determined by the university.

Subject-related university entrance qualification via an aptitude test

Vocationally qualified persons with at least 2 years of recognized vocational training + at least 3 years of professional experience in the subject area of the intended course of study (see § 58 Para. 2 No. 6 LHG).

The following requirements apply in order to participate in the admission procedure:

  1. Written proof of an advising interview held at a university must be provided. (Please arrange an advising appointment with the Dean of Studies of the program for which you are applying for admission at an early stage).
  2. The university will review and determine the professional match.
  3. Proof of having passed an aptitude test. Further information can be found on the HTWG Konstanz website. The examination takes place once a year in April/ May.

To do this, submit your application to the Student Service, area Admissions Officebefore the start of the lecture period:

  • the application"Enrollment as a guest student" (can be found in the download area under Student Service)
  • Confirmation from the lecturers that you are allowed to attend the respective courses (informal).

Guest auditor status is valid for one semester and can generally be applied for for all courses. The amount of the guest auditor fee depends on the number of teaching units/semester hours per week* (SWS) you wish to attend.

up to 4 SWS per week: EUR 60,00
from 5 to 8 SWS per week: EUR 120,00
from 9 SWS per week: EUR 150,00

* One teaching unit/SWS lasts 45 minutes.

For language courses the following guest auditor fees apply:

Up to 4 teaching units per week: EUR 180.00
From 5 to 8 teaching units per week: EUR 340,00

Applicants who have already completed a course of study at a German university can be admitted within the framework of a special quota. The selection is based on a determined measurement number.

If you are interested in pursuing a second degree with us at RWU, you must apply as normal during the regular application periods via our RWU online application portal.

Additional documents:

  • informal justification of the second degree program
  • Copy of Bachelor's/Master's transcript, incl. transcript of grades

Please note: Please take into account the fees for a second degree program.

If you are interested in entering a higher semester with us at RWU, you must apply as normal during the regular application periods via our RWU online application portal. Please note that not all subject semesters (FS) are offered in the winter and summer semesters. You should be able to provide evidence of approximately 30 credits per completed semester.

Important: Applications for a higher FS can only be considered if the program also has free capacities in the respective FS. Therefore, official feedback on the application can only be given after the regular application period or after the re-registration period at RWU.

Additional documents:

The application for an internal change of program is done online like a normal student application. You can apply directly with your student account online via myCampus - the university portal of RWU apply.

The study places allocated in the hardship quota are awarded to applicants for whom the rejection of the application for admission would represent an "exceptional hardship".

Definition of "exceptional hardship: if special social or family reasons inherent in one's own person make it absolutely necessary to take up studies immediately or to change the place of study immediately (or if further waiting is unreasonable).

Examples:

  • Illness with a tendency to aggravate (must be personal).
  • Restriction in the choice or practice of a profession, which only allows the choice of certain occupational fields or requires the abandonment of the previous study or profession, whereby, as a rule, the intended study must lead to the expectation of a successful professional integration and a reasonable bridging of the waiting period is unreasonably difficult or not possible.

The application is made by an informal letter, as well as the relevant evidence. It is important to note that proof of illness, for example, is not sufficient for the application to be approved. Instead, you must additionally prove that you are experiencing "exceptional hardship" due to this burdensome circumstance; e.g., by means of a specialist medical opinion.

Evidence:

  • Expert medical opinion, which sufficiently comments on the listed reasons (should contain comprehensible statements about the origin, severity, course, treatment options of the impairment and prognosis of further development for medical laypersons).
  • Possibly additional evidence (in particular, a severely disabled person's ID card, notice of assessment from the pension office (evidence of severe disability alone is not sufficient, but can supplement a medical opinion).

If you have"impairment-related circumstances beyond your control that led to the delay in obtaining the HZB," then you may submit an application for waiting period improvement to obtain an increase in the number of semesters in the waiting period quota.

Examples:

  • Prolonged absence from classes due to illness within the last three years prior to acquiring the HZB.
  • GdB v. 50 or higher (= severe disability)
  • longer severe disability/illness, if not already covered by the two aforementioned reasons

  • or other comparable special health circumstances

The application is made by an informal letter, as well as the corresponding evidence. Important, only the proof of e.g. the illness is not sufficient for an acceptance of the application. Instead, you must additionally prove that the acquisition of your HZB has been delayed due to this burdening circumstance; e.g. by a certificate from your school about the reason and duration of the delay.

Evidence:

  • Certificate from the school about the reason or duration of the delay in acquiring the HZB (e.g. repetition of a school year due to several months of hospitalization or high absenteeism due to illness).
  • Specialist medical report
  • Determination notice of the pension office
  • or other supporting evidence

If you have"impairment-related circumstances beyond your control that prevented you from achieving a better HZB," then you may submit an application to improve your grade point average.

Examples:

  • Prolonged absence from classes due to illness within the last three years prior to earning the HZB.
  • GdB v. 50 or higher (= severe disability)
  • prolonged severe disability/illness, if not already covered by the two aforementioned reasons

  • or other comparable special health circumstances

The application is made by an informal letter, as well as the corresponding evidence. Important, only the proof of e.g. the illness is not sufficient for an acceptance of the application. Instead, you must additionally prove that you have acquired a worse HZB due to this burdening circumstance; e.g. by an official school report.

Evidence:

  • School reports (not from individual teachers!) and copies of school reports that prove the connection between the impairment-related circumstances and the drop in academic performance (all documents on which the school report is based must be enclosed)
  • expert medical opinion
  • Assessment notice from the pension office
  • or other supporting evidence
Selection procedure

Admission requirements and selection procedure

What requirements are to be met for my desired degree program?

The decision as to whether applicants are accepted into to a degree program depends on the, so-called, procedural grade. Most Bachelor's degree programs are made up by the grades of the university entrance qualification in German, mathematics and an additional language skill, as well as the overall average grade.  Further qualifications and activities, such as voluntary service or internships, can improve the grade procedure.

At RWU, a selection process is carried out on the basis of the application documents. The respective admission regulations can be found on the website under Student Service / Admissions Office.

The procedural grade for Bachelor's programs is determined by the weighted overall grade and possible improvements.

Calculation formula

The overall grade is calculated using the following formula: [(average grade of HZB) + (grades German + Mathematics *2 + continued modern foreign language)/4] / 2.

Calculation formula for the degree program in Social Work

For the Social Work program, the math grade is not double weighted: [(average grade of HZB) + (grades of German, mathematics and continued modern foreign language)/3] /2.

Improvement of the overall grade:

Many programs offer to improve the overall grade through prior experience and extracurricular qualifications. For more information, see "What can I get credit for?" below.

Which admission requirements apply to which bachelor's degree program can be found in the admission statutes of the respective program. The statutes can be downloaded here.

In general, the following selection criteria apply to the formation of the admission grade for a bachelor's degree program:

  1. Result of the university entrance qualification (average grade) and
  2. Individual grades of the university entrance qualification that provide information about the subject-specific aptitude:
    1. Mathematics
    2. German
    3. a continued modern foreign language; in the case of several foreign languages, the course taken in all four semesters of the upper school is initially given priority, then the course completed with the best result is given priority.

In addition, the selection is made according to the following previous experience, which provides information about the
subject-specific aptitude:

  1. Completed vocational training in an occupation that is assigned to a main occupational group in the list of recognized training occupations pursuant to Section 90 (3) No. 3 of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG), as amended from time to time, and work experience of at least 12 months in a training occupation in the same main occupational group, insofar as this has not already been taken into account as part of the completed vocational training, and
  2. special previous training, practical activities or extracurricular achievements and qualifications that provide information about the subject-specific performance; per applicant.

There are the following selection criteria for the formation of the procedure grade for the Master's programs:

  1. The admission requirement is a relevant university degree or an equivalent degree with a scope of 210 ECTS credits.
    • The required field of study and the minimum required final grade of the university degree and any other necessary admission requirements can be found in the table in Appendix 1 for the individual master's degree programs.
    • Applicants whose Bachelor's degree comprises 180 ECTS must complete the missing ECTS at the latest by the time they register for the Master's thesis.
    • The missing 30 ECTS can be obtained by recognizing competences acquired outside of school or by acquiring competences by taking modules of relevant bachelor programs. Students will be advised in this regard by the Dean of Studies.
    • The modules to be taken are to be approved by the examination board of the program, in the computer science program by the selection committee.
  2. The study places to be awarded after deduction of the preliminary quotas (hardship quota and location binding) are awarded after formation of a ranking list based on the result of the university degree, which is a prerequisite for admission to the Master's program, and, if applicable, other selection criteria.
    • Any further selection criteria for the individual study programs can be found in the table in Appendix 1.
  3. In the Master's program in Technology Management & Optimization, 2 study places are allocated in advance for the summer semester and 3 study places are allocated in advance for the winter semester for applicants with a Bachelor's degree from the Physical Engineering program.
    • The ranking list is drawn up on the basis of the determined procedural grade, starting with the best grade.
    • In the event of a tie, the order is decided by lot.
    • Applicants who do not receive an offer of admission in advance will participate in the further selection process.

For questions concerning the topic of admission please contact the Admissions Office is at your disposal.

What can I get credit for?

In addition to academic achievement, extracurricular activities may lead to an improvement in the admission grade.

Recognized achievements may include:

  • The course of study Media Design offers a voluntary Homework Assignment to improve the admission grade by up to 1.5 grades
  • Participation in the trial study Talent scanner at the RWU
  • Voluntary service (voluntary social year, federal voluntary service, voluntary military service)
  • International voluntary services (e.g. in development aid, stays abroad in the service of an NGO)
  • Social commitment (e.g. volunteer fire department, technical relief organization)
  • Completed relevant internships
  • School prizes and successful participation in competitions (e.g. "Jugend Forscht" competition for young researchers, national mathematics competition, programming competition)
  • Tutoring in the context of employment with a tutoring organization or in a public institution
  • Education of own children

Which activities are recognized and how they are weighted differs depending on the study program. A detailed list can be found in the admission statutes of the bachelor's and master's degree programs. The current version is available on the website of the Admissions Office in the download area.

Warten Wartesemester Zeit Sanduhr

Waiting semester

Each semester that one was not enrolled at a German educational institution after obtaining the university entrance qualification is considered a waiting semester. A calendar year comprises two semesters - the summer and winter semesters. In addition to the numerus clausus and the Abitur grade, the number of waiting semesters is another factor that plays a role in the allocation of university places. At German universities, there is always a separate contingent of free study places, which is allocated via the waiting semesters. In courses with restricted admissions, around 20 percent of all places are awarded to applicants with a long waiting period. Waiting semesters are therefore particularly helpful for school leavers who do not have an outstanding Abitur.

Spitzensport und Studium

Study and competitive sports

Since top athletes are often location-bound, there is a special quota when applying for a restricted-admission degree program. To be eligible for this special quota, applicants must prove that they:

  1. belong to an Olympic, perspective, supplementary or team sports squad or junior squad formed at the federal level by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, or
  2. are anelected member of a local political body with a general political mandate (no interest groups, etc.) and for this reason are bound to the place of study.

Proof is provided in the form of a letter from the respective sports federation/club and is enclosed with the application together with an informal letter. In addition, the option is selected in the RWU application portal under the item "Reasons for hardship application".

FAQ Selection and admission procedure

If you are interested in one of our degree programs for which places are allocated via the DoSV, your application begins with registration in the hochschulstart.de application portal. For the registration you enter your personal data. You will then receive an applicant ID (BID) and an applicant authentication number (BAN). You will need these to apply in the RWU application portal. After you have submitted your application, it is important to prioritize the applications on hochschulstart.de if you have applied for several degree programs that are coordinated via the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV). If you receive several offers of admission, lower-priority applications with offers of admission are automatically eliminated.

The Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure supports the universities in their admission processes and helps to avoid vacant study places.
Information on the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure is available at sv.hochschulstart.de. Here you will find a wealth of information on registration and application, FAQs and much more.

The admission or rejection notices will be made available for you to download from the RWU application portal. They will not be sent by mail.

Please note that you will only be informed about status changes of your application (e.g. admitted) if you have activated e-mail not ifications.

Save your notification promptly for your records - you will not be able to access it after the application process.

Yes, if not all admitted applicants have enrolled within the enrollment period, you will be moved up. In case of admission in the backlog procedure, you will receive an admission notice in the RWU application portal.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our colleagues at the Admissions Office.

Insurance

Health insurance

A health insurance certificate is required for enrollment. Students enrolled at state or state-recognized universities in Germany are subject to compulsory insurance.

For enrollment, the health insurance company provide the insurance status electronically to the university (know as M10). Please ask your health insurance company for this notification.

Students with private health insurance require a certificate of exemption from compulsory health insurance. This is sent electronically to the university by the statutory health insurance companies (M10). Please contact a statutory health insurance company for this.

Ravensburg-Weingarten University's dispatch number: H0002749 (to be provided to the health insurance company).

Student health insurance

Up to and including the age of 25, students can be co-insured with their legally insured parents, guardians or spouse. This means that students do not have to pay their own contributions to the health insurance fund. The statutory health insurance company reports the insurance status electronically (M10) to the university.

If family insurance is not an option, it is possible to have student health insurance till the age of 30 . The statutory health insurance company reports the insurance status electronically (M10) to the university.

After age 30, student health insurance is no longer available. Insurance is now either voluntary or private. It should be noted that insurance contributions are higher. The public health insurance company reports the insurance status electronically (M10) to the university.

After studies

If you interrupt your studies, e.g. due to an internship semester, your insurance status may change and thus your contribution rates may change. For clarification of the insurance status, your health insurance company will provide information.

Health insurance relationships change as soon as the student status ceases. In the case of de-registration, the statutory health insurance companies are automatically informed by the university. In the case of private health insurance companies, this must be done by the student him/herself.

It is possible that higher contributions for your health insurance will have to be paid after de-registration or that the entitlement to family insurance will be forfeited.

If you have any further questions with regards to insurance, please direct them to the respective health insurance company.
