Lightweight construction and Simulation


The field of Lightweight construction and Simulation represents one of the supreme disciplines of mechanical engineering and vehicle construction, in which the entire knowledge of materials science, shaping and structure calculation is required. The lighter a product, the less energy is required for its operation during its service life. This important ecological aspect has a decisive influence on the holistic balancing of lightweight construction.

Main Focus

During your studies you will deepen your knowledge of lightweight construction materials and functional materials (smart materials) with special emphasis on lightweight construction methods and joining technologies. Lightweight structures are designed with the aid of fatigue strength and the finite element method (FEM).

5th semester:

  • Fatigue strength and structural optimization
  • Modeling and Simulation

From the 5th to the 7th semester there are extensive options (5 modules) to deepen your knowledge and your own interests.

Career & Perspectives

More than 100 years ago, the first lightweight products were developed in the Lake Constance - Upper Swabia region. Numerous high-tech companies have emerged from these developments. Lightweight construction specialists are not only in demand in aerospace and earthbound vehicle construction. They are needed, for example, in the structural design of wind turbines, robot components and in medical technology (e.g. endoprosthetics and exoprosthetics).
