Creative and Independent

Our mission as a university is to educate people to think and act both independently and creatively so that they can develop their talents and make a positive contribution to our society. If you want to be a part of RWU's educational mission and help shape the future of our university, whether through teaching, research, or one of the many supporting roles which make science possible, you've come to the right place.

We hope the short description of our university below piques your interest in working at RWU. If it does, then take a look at our job openings!

We are looking forward to meeting you!

Practice-based and Personal

An important part of our work is to ensure that we teach our students how to apply what they have learned to real-world problems. We seek to make the practical relevance of what our students learn tangible - through our teaching methods, in the laboratory, and on excursions. For university departments less directly involved in the classroom, such as the central administration, being practice-oriented means that we work together to find viable solutions and take a hands-on approach when it comes to tackling challenges.

We are a university of short distances, both literally and figuratively. Our facilities are situated in close proximity to each other on a compact campus, which promotes face-to-face contact with colleagues and facilitates cooperation. Flat hierarchies and personal contact are important to us, which is why we make a point of ensuring that university directors and those in management maintain an open door policy for their staff. Welcome events for new professors and employees are held on a regular basis to help them establish connections with colleagues and important liaisons, and to provide newcomers with important tips and guidance in order to foster professional success.

International and Innovative

As a professor at RWU you will do some of your teaching in English, and supervise international students from a wide range of countries. More than ten percent of our approximately 3,700 students come to us from abroad. If you take a non-academic position, for example in the Student Administration Office or the International Office, you will advise and support young international students on a daily basis. That's why we offer academic English classes to all of our professors and staff, as well as encourage and sponsor job shadowing, language courses, staff training weeks, and short-term lectureships abroad with Erasmus+.

For us, being an international institution also means daring to take on the problems that face our globalized world and trying to solve those problems with innovative concepts, for example in the fields of e-mobility, autonomous systems, or novel nursing concepts. As a researcher at RWU, you can become a part of our research institutes and projects, as well as teach and support students in their own concept development.

Make RWU Your Own

Whether you are a staff member or a professor, there are many ways to get involved at RWU. You can play an active role in shaping the university by joining one of the numerous working groups or committees. You can help make RWU a safer place to work by becoming a member of the campus first responder or fire safety organizations. Or you can get involved in an advocacy group or one of our research institutes. We believe in constructive discussion and open debate at our university, and we encourage our employees to get involved with the issues that they care about.

Continuing Education

We offer all our employees - academics and staff members alike - numerous opportunities for internal and external continuing education in the form of workshops, seminars, and lectures. We support our managers with our "FührungPlus" ("Leadership Plus" in English) management program, and our teaching staff can seek advice from the university didactics team on innovative teaching methods and techniques. We promote the soft skills, international mindset, and interpersonal competencies of our employees via paid English lessons and continuing education opportunities abroad with Erasmus+ (link to German-language page).

What We Offer Teachers

As a teacher at RWU, you can take advantage of our extensive network of industry contacts in the Lake Constance region, whether for student projects or your own research work. In contrast to large universities, RWU offers small class sizes that allow you to dedicate more time to each individual student. A compact campus and flat hierarchies allow you to develop personal contacts with employees from all departments at RWU. Last but not least, you will have a wide degree of academic freedom and the opportunity to structure your courses as you see fit.

What We Offer Staff

As an employee in one of the non-academic departments of the university such as IT, HR, or accounting, you will work in small teams on a wide variety of diverse tasks. We offer our employees many different options for individualizing their schedule, from flextime accounts to part-time positions to remote work.

Compatibility of Career and Family

It's important to us that professional life and family life be compatible. Integrating those two spheres is at the heart of our organization and we have been certified as a family-friendly university for several years now. If something comes up and you need to look after your child during the work day, you can do so in our parent-child office, for example. Working from home or cutting back hours to part time are options as well. We can also provide you with advice on caring for dependents and how best to integrate that work into your professional life.

Promoting a Healthy Workplace

Health and general well-being have a direct influence on whether we can engage in our work with joy and enthusiasm. That is why promoting and maintaining the health of our employees is an important issue. We offer a variety of health promotion initiatives to all members of our staff each semester. Courses and events often take place during the workday and include motivational talks, physical therapy consultation, and workouts during the lunch break. The topic of healthy leadership is also an integral part of our management development program.
