The InformatiCup is an annual programming competition in which students from different universities compete against each other. It is organized by the German Informatics Society in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This year, the task was to optimize a virtual game for mining resources by cleverly placing buildings.

The RWU team "The Butterflies", consisting of three students from the master's program in computer science Lisa Binkert, Leopold Gaube and Yasin Koschinski, spent three months working on a solution. Under the supervision of Professor Dr. Markus Schneider, they finally decided on a solution approach from artificial intelligence: in reinforcement learning, a virtual agent explores its environment through trial and error in order to learn the rules of the game as well as an optimal strategy for placing the buildings.

The jury has now evaluated all the solutions submitted and invited the best four teams to the finals in Hamburg on April 24. The RWU team is among them! It remains to be seen whether the butterflies can hold their own against strong competition from Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences and two teams from the University of Potsdam to win the prize money of 4,000 euros.
