Weingarten - The discovery of the north-facing corridor in the Great Pyramid of Giza made headlines around the world in March 2023. One of the first people to see the previously unknown chamber from the inside and be involved in its discovery is Johannes Rupfle. He studied Automotive Engineering at RWU and was the only mechanical engineer among geophysicists, archaeologists and other researchers involved in the discovery.

In the Wednesday seminar on the 15th November 2023, Johannes Rupfle talks about this event. His lecture will illustrate the discovery of the corridor and compare theories and facts. An overview of the measurement techniques used provides information about the technical possibilities and physical limits. A look into the future reveals that there are many more secrets hidden inside the pyramid, which the ScanPyramids Team is trying to unravel.

More questions than answers

The pyramids of Giza were built around 4,500 years ago and are the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. Ancient papyrus writings reveal that there were orders to build secret chambers. The paucity of fact-based knowledge about the Great Pyramid of Giza continues to fuel a multitude of theories about the construction, the actual purpose and possible other internal structures of the pyramid.

Johannes Rupfle is a scientist at the Technical University of Munich in the field of non-destructive testing with a focus on sensor-based continuous monitoring of wind turbines and the further development of non-destructive testing techniques in archaeology and for the preservation of world cultural heritage. After studying automotive engineering at RWU, he completed a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and a second one as a DAAD scholarship holder in Energy and Environment at the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires.
