The two virtual sustainability weeks of Baden-Württemberg universities and colleges, which ended on the Whitsun weekend, received a consistently positive response. "For the first time, we brought the Sustainability Weeks to Weingarten and with the support of a wide range of study programs and university groups we put together a diverse digital program," reported Aline Steger, Academic Assistant at the Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten (PH) and member of the organizing team. Behind the "we" stands a group of committed students and employees from Weingarten (PH and RWU) and Ravensburg (DHBW). The goal of all participants is to promote sustainable thinking and actions at the universities, to make existing commitment visible and to motivate students to become active themselves.

"Thanks to the online format, it was possible to reach a broad audience far beyond the borders of Baden-Württemberg", the local organizing team was pleased to say, referring to the exchange of knowledge with students from other universities and the networking with other student initiatives. The network that has emerged in recent weeks and months makes interest in sustainable issues of all kinds palpable and increases the pressure to act, said the team.

A varied program for climate protection

The feedback was correspondingly positive: Speakers and participants praised the diverse program with around 150 events, including digital lectures and workshops, which conveyed different perspectives on sustainability and offered interesting impulses. RWU professors Dr. Wolfgang Ertel and Dr. Markus Pfeil spoke about climate and species protection and sustainability at universities. At the virtual market of opportunities organized by the environment student work group of RWU and PH, interested parties had the opportunity for a direct exchange with students and initiatives active on the Weingarten campus. The market also highlighted opportunities to get involved oneself. In addition, the format enabled networking between the participating initiatives. They expressed the desire to network more beyond the sustainability weeks in order to enable better cooperation between all groups involved on campus.

Aline Steger reported that a working group at the Baden-Württemberg level had dedicated itself to drawing up a demand paper to round off the Sustainability Weeks. The paper calls for necessary measures for a sustainable and socially responsible everyday life at universities in the areas of governance, operation, teaching, research and transfer.

For the Weingarten-Ravensburg organization team, it is already clear that the students from Upper Swabia will be involved in next year's Sustainability Weeks once again.
