Creating knowledge for better health ... ... for research and practice

"Health is created and lived by people within the settings of their everyday life; where they learn, work, play and love." (Ottawa Charter, 1986)

Not only since the Ottawa Charter has it been known that health is created in daily life. A multitude of factors from various social areas - above all our social situation - influence our health.

The health sciences deal interdisciplinary with the question, what makes us sick or keeps us healthy and use this knowledge for the solution of concrete health problems. The focus is on deriving and organizing interventions that meet our needs. In the Master's programme you will learn how to prepare science-based decisions, design and implement plans in the complex field of action of our health care system.

Research in the field of practice

We are concerned with applied research in the field of practice and with scientifically based action. The control of processes that should lead to better health is often illustrated with the so-called Public Health Action Cycle. In our Applied Health Science program, you will acquire the skills to work at all four levels of this planning cycle.

The first stage is the assessment, often in the form of health and social reporting, for which methodological knowledge of epidemiology and health economics, knowledge of potential data sources and communicative skills are required - and acquired here.

At the level of goal and strategy formulation (policy formulation), communicative competences are also needed, but also knowledge of the relevant decision-makers and structures (e.g. at the municipal level of the health conferences and the most important actors).

In order to ensure the implementation of the initiated measures (assurance), you will learn to accompany, manage and evaluate processes.

At the final stage of the PHAC, the evaluation of results, appropriate methodological skills and knowledge of suitable indicators are required.

Course of studies

Since the health sciences are a very broad field, it is necessary to set certain priorities in a Master's programme. In our Master's programme in Applied Health Science, these are the focal points of Public Health (public concern for the health of all), research into and influencing psychosocial factors influencing health, closely linked to this are the future areas of prevention and health promotion (which were recently strengthened by the Prevention Act) as well as health economics and nursing science as further established teaching and research focal points of our faculty.

In the Master's programme in Applied Health Science, we attach great importance to a close integration of theory and practice and would like to provide you with your first practical and professional experience during your studies. Thus, for example, Master's theses often take place in cooperation with various practice centres, and by dealing with extensive secondary data sets, these often lead directly to a first scientific publication. The latter often offers options for further stages of scientific qualification, such as entry into a doctoral process.
